The Art of Building Connections: Lessons from Sales, Customer Service, and Community Engagement

Throughout my career, one lesson has stood out above all others: the power of building genuine connections. Whether in sales, customer service, or community engagement, the ability to forge meaningful relationships has been the key to both personal and professional success. For me, this journey began in the diemaking and diecutting consumables industry and has carried over into my current venture as the co-founder of Stowers’ Flowers. Along the way, I’ve learned that building connections is not just about networking—it’s about trust, empathy, and a genuine commitment to others.

The Foundation: Understanding People

When I started in sales support in July 2013, my primary goal was to learn the ropes of the industry. What quickly became clear was that my success wasn’t tied to technical knowledge alone; it was tied to how well I understood people. Whether I was assisting a colleague or helping a client, the ability to listen and empathize made all the difference.

In operations management, I honed this skill even further. Overseeing inventory, customer service, and technology required constant collaboration with my team and clients. Understanding their needs and anticipating challenges became second nature. These interactions taught me that people want to feel heard and valued—and when they do, they’re more likely to trust and support you.

Sales Leadership: Building Trust Through Consistency

When I transitioned to a sales leadership role managing the Northeast Territory, the stakes felt higher. I wasn’t just representing myself—I was representing my company. Earning the trust of clients required more than delivering on promises; it required consistency. Clients needed to know that I would follow through, respond to their concerns, and prioritize their success.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this role was building long-term relationships with clients. I’ve always believed that sales isn’t about closing deals; it’s about solving problems. By focusing on my clients’ needs and working collaboratively to find solutions, I was able to build partnerships that lasted years. These relationships were built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to success.

The Heart of Customer Service: Going Above and Beyond

Customer service has always been a cornerstone of my career. Whether managing operations or running my own business, I’ve seen firsthand how going the extra mile can turn a transactional interaction into a memorable experience. In my current role at Stowers’ Flowers, this philosophy is at the heart of everything we do.

Every arrangement we create is an opportunity to bring joy to someone’s life. Whether it’s a bride trusting us with her wedding flowers or a client ordering a bouquet for a loved one, our goal is to exceed expectations. This requires attention to detail, active listening, and a genuine desire to make each interaction special.

I’ve learned that great customer service is about more than solving problems; it’s about creating positive experiences that leave a lasting impression. When clients feel cared for, they’re not just customers—they become advocates for your business.

Community Engagement: The Power of Giving Back

Building connections doesn’t stop with clients and colleagues; it extends to the community. Giving back has always been an important part of my life, and I’ve found that community engagement is one of the most rewarding ways to build connections.

One cause that’s particularly close to my heart is PurpleStride, a 5K walk that raises funds for pancreatic cancer research. Participating in this event allows me to connect with others who share a passion for making a difference. It’s a reminder that the connections we build through shared purpose can be some of the most meaningful.

In September 2024, I was honored to receive the President’s Award for my volunteer work in the diemaking and diecutting industry. This recognition reinforced my belief that giving back not only strengthens communities but also deepens the connections we have with those around us. When we invest in others, we create a ripple effect that touches lives far beyond our own.

Lessons for Life and Business

As I reflect on my journey, I’ve come to see that the art of building connections is a skill that transcends industries and roles. Here are a few lessons that have guided me:

  1. Listen First: Genuine connections start with listening. Whether in a business meeting or a community event, taking the time to understand others’ needs and perspectives lays the foundation for trust.
  2. Be Authentic: People can sense when you’re not being genuine. Building connections requires authenticity and a sincere interest in others.
  3. Follow Through: Trust is built on consistency. When you make a promise, keep it. Reliability is one of the most important traits in both personal and professional relationships.
  4. Focus on Value: Whether you’re serving a client or volunteering in your community, focus on how you can add value. When you prioritize others’ success, you create lasting connections.
  5. Celebrate Others: Recognize the contributions and achievements of those around you. Acknowledging others’ efforts strengthens relationships and fosters a sense of community.

Moving Forward

As I continue to grow personally and professionally, I remain committed to the principles of connection. Whether it’s through my work at Stowers’ Flowers, my involvement in community initiatives, or my everyday interactions, I strive to build relationships that are meaningful and lasting.

The art of building connections is not about perfecting a skill; it’s about embracing a mindset. It’s about approaching each interaction with empathy, curiosity, and a desire to make a positive impact. In doing so, we not only enrich our own lives but also create a network of support and collaboration that benefits everyone involved.

From sales and customer service to community engagement, the lessons I’ve learned have shaped me into the person I am today. And as I look to the future, I’m excited to continue building connections that inspire, uplift, and bring us closer together.
